Should You Seal Wooden Coasters?

The subject of whether or not to seal wooden coasters is a common one. Multiple considerations are warranted in this choice.

Polyurethane With a Water Base

Whether you're restoring a piece of furniture or just want to protect your wood coasters, selecting the appropriate polyurethane is essential. Polyurethanes come in a wide variety of forms, each with its own unique characteristics. With the correct kind, your wooden coasters will have a beautiful polish while coaster being protected from water.

It is simpler to work with polyurethanes that are water-based. They're less dangerous than oil-based options since they're weaker. They are very simple to disinfect after use. They come in a variety of application methods, including as wiping, brushing, and spraying. Polyurethanes formulated with water dry clearly and rapidly. Plus, they won't leave unsightly marks on your woodwork.

How long it takes for a polyurethane to dry is very variable and is affected by both the product and the environment. The drying time for most water-based polymers is roughly 6 hours, but oil-based polymers can take up to 24 hours.

The number of coats you apply and their combined thickness will determine how long it takes for the paint to dry. To speed up the drying process, use a thinner coating. The idea is to apply a thick enough layer of polyurethane and let it to cure completely between coats.

One more durable coating is polycrylic. It has a quicker drying time than polyurethane but is less hazardous. Use a paint sprayer for the thinnest possible coatings, although a foam roller or brush can work too.

Coconut Oil

Tung oil provides a long-lasting, glossy sheen, making it an excellent choice for hardwood coasters. You need know a few things before you apply this coating to your coasters, though.

For starters, get the right kind of tung oil and utilize it. Tung oil comes in a variety of forms, so always check the label before making a purchase.

In addition, you need to make sure the product is applied correctly. A paintbrush, a rag, or even a foam brush can do the trick. Tung oil is best applied to wood by rubbing it in with the grain. It will help keep the wood dry.

Tung oil, once applied, needs at least 30 days to cure before it can be used. By doing so, the oil may penetrate deep into the wood and create a protective seal.

Tung oil isn't the best option for frequently used coasters since it wears out too quickly. Varnish or polyurethane will make the finish last longer. If you plan on using your coasters frequently, you should treat them with tung oil at least twice a year.

Tung oil imparts a glossy sheen to wood that makes it appear wet, hence it is also known as the wet floss finish. Additionally, it serves as a reliable sealant.

Polycrylic

Polycrylic is an excellent choice if you want to add a glossy finish to your hardwood coasters or prevent scratches and spills. Any paintbrush or spray bottle will do for applying this sort of coating. There is a wide range of hues and finishes available for polycrylic.

Polycrylic has a long lifespan, which is one of its key advantages. In addition to withstanding heat of up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, this seal type is also extremely long lasting. This coating is also perfectly safe for use around food. There are a variety of sheen levels and matte forms of polycrylic to choose from.

For this reason, polycrylic is a great choice for refinishing wooden dining table tops, since it lets the wood to retain its natural ability to absorb water. The finish will be ruined by rain and accidental spills since it isn't watertight.

The toxicity of polycrylic is lower than that of oil-based polyurethane. Water and soap will enough to clean it. It's a great alternative to oil-based polyurethane for furniture and other wood accents in the home because it doesn't have that yellowish hue. It's quick-drying properties are another bonus.

Polycrylic is simple to apply, but it doesn't hold up as well as oil-based polyurethane. This is especially true for hardwood coasters, which must withstand repeated soakings.
