How to Fake a Custom-Built Look on Any Budget

When you put the word “custom” in front of something, you instantly make it seem like it’s expensive and high-end. Like it’s not something just anyone can have and, “Look at my incredible self, I had something made especially for me.” And the reason why the term “custom” sounds expensive on its own is because, well… it is. Custom stuff costs a lot, so not everybody can have it. Personalization is pricey! Or so you may think. Contrary to popular belief, affordable custom pieces DO exist, and you can never tell that they’re not pricey by just looking at them.

It’s all about some clever tricks and a few upgrades that really won’t cost you a lot but that gives off that custom-built vibe. And the best thing is that you can do it all by yourself, without hiring an interior designer. Work smarter, not harder, you know what I mean?

You probably don’t, but I bet you’re intrigued, so let me show you how to give your home a high-end makeover without spending a lot of money on it.

Make Architectural Details a Priority

Architectural details are where you should start from because they give depth, character, and a sense of permanence. What I’m trying to say is, they’ll make your home seem like it’s been carefully designed, just for you. Now, I like custom millwork and bespoke finishes as much as the next person, but they’re really expensive, so I’ve found some alternatives that are more friendly to my budget.

First, I’d suggest working on ceilings and baseboards and putting crown molding to get that polished, cohesive look. Even if it’s just a simple trim, you’ll be surprised what a difference it makes. Wall paneling like wainscoting, beadboard, or shiplap add texture and sophistication and any room will look more upscale.

Doors shouldn’t be overlooked either, although for me, they’re the least fun. But still, they can make a big impact. I think that swapping out hollow-core doors for solid wood is the best option there is, but if that’s not to your liking, you can add a decorative trim to the door you already have.

As I said, this is something you can do yourself if you’re a bit more handy, but if you’re not, I would highly recommend hiring remodel services. Pros will get the job done faster and you’ll probably like the results better.

Design Hacks

This is the part where you can DIY everything. These design hacks might feel like they’re just small details but, speaking from experience, they all pack a punch.

Here are my favorite hacks that anyone can do and that will instantly make your home look and feel more expensive.

1. Built-In Illusions to Make the Most of Your Space

If it’s built-in, it already looks more expensive and more intentional. To save some money, you can make furniture and features look like they’re built-in when they’re really not. So, for example, add some shelves around the fireplace or the entertainment center for a more seamless look. In the bedroom, you can use a peel-and-stick wood panel and arrange it behind the bed to make it seem like you have a custom headboard but without the custom price tag.

2. Furniture That Looks Custom-Made

This is one of my favorite hacks because it’s so dang simple. You can upholster old chairs and sofas with fabrics you like, and you can also find thrifted or hand-me-down furniture and repaint it, stain it, or refinish it. Whichever of these options you decide to go for, you’ll get that unique look we’re all after.

3. Layer Textures and Patterns

Designers like layers because they add richness and dimension to the space, so do what they do. My favorite materials are velvet, linen, or woven textiles for furniture because they all look cozy, but luxurious. The perfect balance for furniture, I’d say.

When you’re mixing patterns, try to pair designs that are in contrast (like geometric cushions with floral drapes) for a look that seems curated and feels cohesive.

4. Use Mirrors for Depth

I absolutely adore mirrors and I feel like they’re my secret weapon that makes any room bigger and more elegant. If you place a big mirror in the right location, you’ll create an illusion of expanded space, and if the mirror is vintage, it will add character and sophistication. Not to mention that vintage mirrors usually look really unique.

You can even have a gallery wall with small mirrors that will double as art.

Conclusion

A beautiful, unique-looking home sometimes comes with a hefty price tag, and sometimes it’s just a matter of a few strategic pieces being in the right places and that won’t cost you a lot of money. If you’ve ever watched an interior designer at work, you will have noticed that they don’t always go for the most expensive things, it’s more about what adds character to the space.

With a few hacks and upgrades, your home will look like it came out of a designer’s portfolio, for a fraction of the price!
